Russia destroys Kurakhove reservoir dam, water floods villages
On the morning of November 11, Russian troops shelled Kurakhove in the Donetsk region. As a result, the Stari Terny dam of the Kurakhove reservoir was destroyed, according to Donbas News and Suspilne Donbas.
According to Donbas News' sources, the water in the Vovcha River has risen by 1 meter so far. In the villages along the river, the water is rising.
“We know that water is flowing through the villages located near the Stari Terny dam. We can't confirm the nature of the damage or its severity. We cannot inspect the dam because of the constant Russian shelling as of now,” Roman Padun, head of the Kurakhove City Military Administration, tells Suspilne.
According to him, there is evidence that water is approaching the settlements of the Velykonovosilkivska community.
“We have information from other settlements of the Velykonovosilkivska community that water is coming there because if the floodgates are opened. We state that the dam is probably damaged,” Padun adds.
The inspection of the Russian strike site is complicated due to active fighting in the Pokrovsk and Kurakhove directions.
Depending on the degree of damage to the dam, there is a risk of partial flooding of settlements located downstream of the Vovcha River: the villages of Stari Terny, Ulakly, Konstantynopol, Andriivka, Oleksiivka, Bohatyr, Zelenyi Kut, Novoukrainka and many settlements in Dnipropetrovsk region.
