Russia continues to be one of most important suppliers of energy resources to Europe - Bloomberg
Russia remains an important supplier of energy resources to Europe. Despite losing its position in the European market, Russia accounted for 15% of gas imports into the EU in 2023, Bloomberg reports.
According to the source, by the end of 2023, imports of Russian fossil fuels into the European Union amounted to about $1 billion per month. This is significantly lower than the peak value of $16 billion per month at the beginning of 2022.
According to the European Commission, Russia accounted for 15% of the total gas imports into the EU in 2023, trailing Norway and the US at 30% and 19%, respectively, while surpassing North African countries at 14%.
The majority of Russian gas is delivered via pipelines through Ukraine and Türkiye. Among the largest buyers are Austria, Slovakia, and Hungary.
Countries such as Spain, France, Belgium, and the Netherlands continue to import Russian liquefied natural gas via tankers. Part of this gas is then mixed with other gas sources in the European pipeline network, potentially allowing it to reach Germany despite claims of a rejection of Russian gas.
However, from the perspective of being the largest supplier of pipeline gas, Russia has already been overtaken by Norway. The US has also become the largest supplier of liquefied fuels to Europe.
Earlier, RBC-Ukraine reported that European Commissioner for Energy Kadri Simson stated that after the onset of the full-scale war in Ukraine, the share of Russian gas in imports to EU countries sharply declined. She added that the European Union is ready to completely abandon supplies from Moscow.
