Russia claims gains in Kharkiv region: ISW analyzes the situation on the front

Russian forces continue offensive operations along several sectors of the front, but no confirmed advances have been recorded in most of them. The situation remains most intense in the northern parts of Sumy and Kharkiv regions, according to the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).
In northern Sumy region, Russian forces continued offensive operations but were unable to advance on September 24 and 25. At the same time, Russian forces are increasingly using upgraded Molniya drones to hunt Ukrainian reconnaissance drones.
In northern Kharkiv region, Russian forces also continued their attacks without confirmed advances. Russian milbloggers claimed that Russian forces had allegedly captured several settlements near Velykyi Burluk and encircled Ukrainian troops. However, ISW found no evidence to confirm these claims.
On the Lyman axis, Ukrainian counterattacks are creating problems for the Russian offensive. Ukrainian servicemen report that Russian forces are carrying out chaotic strikes based on inaccurate information about the situation on the front in an attempt to identify the positions of Ukraine's Defense Forces.
East of Sloviansk, Ukrainian forces continue to hold their positions, including near Rai-Oleksandrivka. Ukrainian counterattacks on the Lyman and Sloviansk axes are limiting Russia's ability to launch a large-scale offensive toward Sloviansk.
On the Kostiantynivka axis, Russian forces also continued offensive operations on September 24 and 25. However, they made no confirmed advances. At the same time, Russian forces recently advanced southeast of Dobropillia, which remains one of the important areas of Russia's offensive near Pokrovsk.
On the Novopavlivka axis, Russian forces continued their attacks but likewise made no confirmed advances. Ukrainian forces, meanwhile, continue to hold positions northeast of Oleksandrivka.
On the southern axis, Russian sources continue to claim advances near Svitla Dolyna, Zorivka and Zelena Dibrova northwest of Huliaipole, but these claims have not been confirmed. According to ISW, the areas where Russia claims advances are located a considerable distance from the nearest assessed Russian positions.
Situation on the front
As a reminder, we recently reported that Russian forces had attempted to breach Ukrainian defenses for two consecutive days along several sectors of the front, but made little progress almost everywhere. The most intense fighting was in Sumy and Kharkiv regions and near Donetsk region.
At the same time, over the past several days, Ukraine's Defense Forces have advanced in Kharkiv, Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia regions. They also disrupted a number of offensive operations by Russian forces.
Ukrainian forces have also achieved positive results during counteroffensive operations in the Lyman area.
At the same time, Russian forces are attempting to expand their zone of control in Sumy and Kharkiv regions.
