Last night, the Sumy region came under a massive airstrike by enemy Shahed kamikaze drones, targeting energy infrastructure in the Konotop, Okhtyrka, and Sumy districts, according to the Sumy Regional Military Administration and Sumyoblenergo.

As a result of the attacks, critical infrastructure, including water utilities and hospitals, sustained damage. These facilities are now connected to backup power systems.

Air defense forces managed to shoot down 16 Shahed drones over Sumy. Emergency crews are working to restore power in the affected areas, including Sumy, Konotop, Okhtyrka, and other districts.

As of 7 AM on September 17, 281,072 consumers in the region remain without electricity. Specialists from Sumyoblenergo are working to restore supply as quickly as possible.

Night attack on Ukraine

The massive enemy assault began on the evening of September 16. Around midnight, air raid sirens sounded in Kyiv, the Kyiv region, and several northern regions of Ukraine. During the attack, the enemy struck Konotop and Sumy.

During the nighttime assault on Ukraine, Russia launched over 50 attack drones, with air defense managing to shoot down 34 of them.

Russian forces have recently ramped up their use of Shahed kamikaze drones. Aviation expert Kostiantyn Kryvolap explained the reasons behind this increased activity in a comment to RBC-Ukraine.
