Russian forces struck a civilian cargo ship flying the Liberian flag at one of the ports in the Odesa region. One sailor was killed, and three others were injured, according to the press service of the Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority (USPA).
According to reports, a sailor-engineer was killed in the attack, while three other crew members were injured.
Thirteen crew members were evacuated to a safe location.
“This is another deliberate Russian strike on civilian shipping. Russia continues to terrorize the peaceful merchant fleet and sailors who risk their lives every day to keep Ukraine’s maritime routes operating,” the USPA emphasized.
Russian attacks on civilian vessels
Overnight on September 23, Russian forces struck a cargo ship flying the flag of Antigua and Barbuda in the Black Sea. The ship’s captain was killed.
On September 17, a Russian drone attacked a civilian vessel flying the flag of Tanzania that was heading to one of the Ukrainian ports.
The ship’s captain was killed in the strike, while three other crew members were injured.
Earlier, a foreign civilian vessel sank in the Black Sea near Odesa after being hit by a Russian missile. Ten people were killed in the attack.
Overall, during the 4.5 years of the full-scale war, Russian forces have destroyed 1,054 Ukrainian port infrastructure facilities and struck 232 civilian vessels.
The Ukrainian delegation reported these figures during a meeting of the OSCE Forum for Security Co-operation, emphasizing the threat to global food security.
