US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that President Donald Trump is the leader who has a real chance to end the war in Ukraine. In an interview with Fox News Radio, he emphasized that the situation has become closer to resolution.

Marco Rubio said that despite the lack of concrete steps toward peace, the situation at the front has become relatively closer to resolution.

He emphasized that although the war has been going on for three years, some efforts, in particular on the part of US President Donald Trump, could be the key to ending the conflict.

“I think there’s a lot to be worked on, but we’re closer than we were two weeks ago or closer than we were six months ago,” Rubio said.

He stressed the importance of last week's meeting in Saudi Arabia when Ukraine promised a temporary ceasefire to start peace talks. However, in order to finally achieve a stable peace, it is necessary to obtain similar commitments from Russia.

“But I think the President needs – President Trump needs to be applauded for trying to find peace. And look, he’s the only leader in the world right now that can do this. The Chinese can’t do this. The Europeans can’t do this,” Rubio added.

The secretary of state also said that US envoy Steve Witkoff met with Russian leader Vladimir Putin and that this meeting brought some results.

The US president is now expected to hold a new conversation with Putin, after which additional details about a peaceful settlement will emerge.

Despite the fact that no concrete agreements have been reached so far, Rubio expressed optimism about a peace process, noting that the current steps give hope for a successful outcome in the future.

Ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine

Ukraine accepted the US proposal to cease fire with Russia for 30 days. On March 13, US officials began discussing this issue with the Russian side. However, Moscow has not yet given a final answer.

The United States has already threatened to impose the toughest sanctions against Russia if it does not want to end the war.

Trump said that he would hold talks with Putin on March 18 in the morning, Washington time. Speaking to reporters, Trump said that Russia would “agree” to a 30-day truce with Ukraine.
