Rubio calls war in Ukraine a 'proxy war' between US and Russia that needs to end

US President Donald Trump sees the war in Ukraine as a protracted and deadlocked conflict, which is a proxy war between the US, which supports Kyiv, and Russia, says Secretary of State Marco Rubio in his interview with Fox News.
“And frankly, it’s a proxy war between nuclear powers – the United States, helping Ukraine, and Russia – and it needs to come to an end. And no one has any idea or any plan to bring it to an end,” Rubio said.
According to him, none of the parties currently has a clear plan to end it. He believes that the strategy of Ukraine's allies is limited to continuous military support, which, in his opinion, is not an effective solution to the situation.
Rubio notes that Russia, although it experienced difficulties at the beginning of the war, remains a great power and has made some progress, but at the same time does not have a significant advantage. So, the conflict has reached a stalemate. He emphasizes that Trump seeks to find a way to peace by engaging both sides in negotiations and urges Ukraine not to sabotage this process.
According to him, tensions between Kyiv and Washington increased after the US Vice President's statement about the need for a diplomatic solution to the war.
“President Zelenskyy unfortunately made the decision to challenge the Vice President and start questioning whether diplomacy is even possible; in essence, sabotaging and undermining the President’s plan,” Rubio said, adding that this is what led to the conflict.
He expressed hope that this position would be reconsidered, as negotiations will inevitably require concessions from both sides.
“The Ukrainians have to be there, obviously. It’s their country. The Russians have to be at that table. And only President Trump can make that possible,” Rubio concluded.
A meeting between the US and Ukraine
The head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, Andriy Yermak, had a call with the US National Security Advisor Mike Waltz recently. They agreed to meet the negotiating teams soon.
Ukraine and the United States are reportedly discussing the date and place of the meeting to negotiate an end to the war. The negotiating team is being discussed.
