Rocket attack targets military base hosting US forces in Baghdad - Reuters
Unknown assailants attacked an American military base near Baghdad International Airport with at least two Katyusha rockets, reports Reuters.
Two Iraqi military officials reported early Tuesday, October 1, that the rockets were intercepted by air defense systems.
Sources within the security forces indicated that, according to preliminary investigations, three rockets were launched. One rocket landed near buildings housing Iraqi counter-terrorism forces, causing damage and igniting several vehicles, but there were no reported casualties.
Attacks on US troops in Iraq
In Iraq, there are 2,500 American troops stationed, alongside armed groups linked to Iran's security forces.
Since the outbreak of the war in the Gaza Strip in fall 2023, Iran-affiliated armed groups in Iraq have repeatedly targeted US forces.
On September 11, a US military base at Baghdad Airport was shelled, and the US diplomatic facility in Baghdad was also attacked on the same day. There were no reports of casualties.
Earlier in August, unknown assailants fired Katyusha rockets at Ain al-Asad airbase in western Iraq, resulting in injuries among American soldiers.
Subsequently, Iraqi intelligence services arrested the organizers of that attack.
