American military base in Iraq attacked with rockets: Possible cause named
Two rockets have struck the area around the American military base Camp Victory, located near Baghdad Airport in Iraq, reports Reuters.
Agency sources reported that the attack caused material damage but no casualties.
The Iraqi armed group Kataib Hezbollah, which supports Iran, suggested that the targeting of Baghdad Airport was an attempt to disrupt the scheduled visit of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Wednesday morning.
The group has called on Iraqi security forces to investigate and identify those responsible for the attack.
US military contingent in Iraq
The US has tentatively agreed to a phased withdrawal of coalition forces, led by American troops, from Iraq by 2026.
In late August, US and Iraqi forces eliminated a group of ISIS militants in western Iraq.
According to media reports, Iraq is simultaneously an ally of both Iran and the US. The country hosts 2,500 American soldiers and also has militias supported by Tehran.
However, the conflict between Hamas and Israel in the Gaza Strip has intensified the rivalry between Islamist groups and Western coalition forces. In early August, two Katyusha rockets were fired at the Ain al Asad airbase in western Iraq.
