Richard Gere's journey from aspiring musician to Hollywood star and 'brother of Ukrainians'

Richard Gere has remained one of Hollywood's best-known actors for decades. But his path to worldwide fame did not begin with film—music played an important role in his youth.
Styler takes a closer look at the star's life, who publicly expressed his support for Ukraine ahead of Independence Day.
Music came first
Long before Hollywood, music played an important role in Richard Gere's life. In school, he played the trumpet, piano, and guitar and also wrote music for school productions. The actor later described music as his "main passion."
After high school, Gere enrolled at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where he studied philosophy, but dropped out after two years. He decided to try his hand at theater and gradually shifted from music to acting.

Later, in 1973, Gere landed the lead role of Danny Zuko in the London production of the musical "Grease." Theater became his first major step toward the fame that would follow.
From theater to Hollywood
Gere began landing notable film roles in the second half of the 1970s. His major breakthrough came with "American Gigolo" in 1980, which established him as one of Hollywood's leading male sex symbols.

Two years later, he starred in "An Officer and a Gentleman," which became a major international hit and firmly established him as a star.
Then, in 1990, "Pretty Woman" was released, with Gere playing Edward Lewis alongside Julia Roberts. The film became one of the most iconic romantic movies of its era, while Gere himself became a heartthrob to millions.

He later starred in many other well-known films, including "Chicago," for which he won a Golden Globe.
Today, Richard Gere is 76 years old. He continues to work in film and is also known for his decades-long humanitarian work.
'I am your brother'
In recent years, his support for Ukraine has taken on a special significance. In particular, ahead of Ukraine's Independence Day in August 2026, Gere recorded a special video message.
The actor congratulated Ukrainians on the holiday, expressed his "complete and unwavering support," and also read an English translation of a poem by Ukrainian poet Yurii Izdryk.
He ended his message with heartfelt words.
"I remain by your side. I am your brother," Richard Gere said.
