Rice and cotton won't help: Apple reveals what to do if your iPhone falls into water
Apple has updated its instructions for when a smartphone warns about moisture entering the charging port. Now, the page specifically mentions that the smartphone should not be dried using rice, reports the official Apple support website.
Details of the updated instruction
"Don’t put your iPhone in a bag of rice. Doing so could allow small particles of rice to damage your iPhone," the Apple support message says.
Apple also advises avoiding other common methods that may worsen the situation: using a hairdryer or compressed air. Inserting any foreign objects into the port, such as cotton swabs or paper towels, is also not recommended due to the risk of leaving particles inside or pushing moisture deeper.
Other tips from Apple
If any liquid other than water gets on your smartphone, rinse it under running water, avoiding moisture entering the ports. Then gently wipe the device with a lint-free soft cloth, such as an optics cloth.
To dry the iPhone, tap it gently on your palm, making sure the charging port is facing down. Then leave the smartphone in a well-ventilated dry place. If you have a fan, place it next to the device so that the cool air flows directly into the Lightning or USB-C port to speed up the drying process.
Do not charge the iPhone with a cable for at least 5 hours after contact with moisture.
Before using wireless charging, it is recommended to wipe the smartphone with a soft cloth. Before placing the iPhone on the charging pad, make sure the case is completely dry.
If the sound quality of the speakers deteriorates after contact with water, check for moisture in them. Place the smartphone with the speakers down on a lint-free cloth and make sure no water is leaking. If moisture traces are found on the cloth, dry the device following the recommendations above.
