Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has criticized his British counterpart, Keir Starmer, over the latter’s announcement to recognize Palestine as a state, according to The Times of Israel.

According to Netanyahu, Starmer is encouraging terrorism by the Hamas group and warned that the threat extends to Britain as well.

"Starmer rewards Hamas’s monstrous terrorism & punishes its victims. A jihadist state on Israel’s border today will threaten Britain tomorrow," read a post on social media platform X.

He also stated that "appeasement towards jihadist terrorists always fails."

"It will fail you too," the official account of the Israeli Prime Minister added.

Background

Earlier on Tuesday, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced that Britain would recognize the State of Palestine in September if Israel fails to take meaningful steps to end what he called the "appalling situation" in Gaza.

In his statement, Starmer emphasized a ceasefire agreement, a rejection of any annexation plans, and a commitment to a long-term peace process.

His remarks came just days after French President Emmanuel Macron said that France would recognize Palestine at the UN General Assembly in September.
