In the Kemerovo region, Russia, a car was blown up in which police lieutenant colonel Veniamin Mazzerin, commander of the OMON Obereg special forces unit of the Russian Guard, was traveling, according to the Defense Intelligence of Ukraine.
Mazzerin was one of the war criminals involved in mass killings, torture, and crimes against the civilian population in the Kyiv region during the occupation of the region by Russian troops in February-March 2022.
It was his unit, the OMON Obereg, that participated in punitive operations, particularly in Bucha and the surrounding villages.
Back in April 2022, Ukrainian intelligence identified the war criminals from Obereg by name and planned measures aimed at bringing those on the list to justice.
Based on the evidence gathered and eyewitness accounts of the events, the Office of the Prosecutor General opened criminal proceedings against the unit's servicemen, in particular for violations of the laws and customs of war.
The explosion that occurred on October 25, 2025, was another signal that those guilty of crimes against Ukrainians will not escape punishment.
Russian atrocities in Bucha
In February 2022, in the early days of the full-scale invasion, Russian troops occupied the town of Bucha in the Kyiv region. During a little over a month of occupation, the invaders killed more than 500 civilians. The scale of the crimes became known only after the liberation of the Kyiv region from Russian troops.
The exact number of victims and the circumstances of many of the killings have not yet been established — dozens of people remain missing. At the same time, many Russian soldiers involved in the atrocities in Bucha have already received the highest punishment — they were eliminated on the front lines by the Ukrainian Defense Forces.
At the end of September, British journalists identified 13 Russian officers and generals involved in large-scale war crimes in Bucha, Kyiv region. According to media reports, at the beginning of the war in March 2022, the Russians killed hundreds of civilians there.
