Reuters learns who Trump may appoint as special representative for Russia-Ukraine war
US President-elect Donald Trump is considering appointing Richard Grenell as special envoy for the Russia-Ukraine war. Grenell is a former intelligence chief under the Republican administration, reports Reuters.
It is known that during Donald Trump's first presidential term (2017-2021), Grenell served as the US Ambassador to Germany and briefly held the role of Director of National Intelligence.
He is expected to play a key role in the incoming president's efforts to end the war, should he ultimately be appointed as special envoy.
Sources clarified that while there is currently no special envoy dedicated solely to resolving the Russia-Ukraine war, Trump is considering the creation of such a position.
At the same time, Trump may decide against appointing a special envoy for the war in Ukraine. However, if he does proceed, he may choose someone else for the role, with no guarantees that Grenell would accept the position.
If Grenell agrees to take on the role, some of his positions may cause Ukrainian leaders to reconsider. For example, during a Bloomberg roundtable in July, he advocated for the creation of autonomous zones as a means of resolving the conflict. He also suggested that he would not support Ukraine's NATO membership shortly, a stance he shares with many of Trump's allies.
Grenell's supporters highlight his long diplomatic career and deep knowledge of European affairs. In addition to his role as US Ambassador to Germany, Grenell also served as the president's special envoy for peace negotiations between Serbia and Kosovo.
Reuters added that Grenell, who campaigned for Trump ahead of the November 5 elections, was one of the top contenders for the position of Secretary of State. However, his candidacy was ultimately proposed to Republican Senator Marco Rubio, a move that surprised and disappointed some of Grenell's close allies.
About a week ago, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that under US President Donald Trump's administration, the war between Russia and Ukraine would end more quickly. He also added, however, that there was no exact date for when that might happen.
