A relative majority of Germans favor the deployment of Bundeswehr forces as part of a possible peacekeeping force in Ukraine to monitor compliance with the ceasefire agreement, according to Reuters.

A Forsa poll conducted for Stern magazine showed that 49% of Germans support sending troops, 44% oppose, and 7% abstained.

In West Germany, 52% of people supported participation, while 65% of people in the former communist eastern states opposed it, the poll said.

It also showed that 83% of voters of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party would reject the direction.

A Defense Ministry spokesperson said earlier that Germany would not refuse to contribute to the peacekeeping mission if a framework is established.

At the same time, Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said she opposed sending soldiers to Ukraine.

However, any decision is likely to be made by the new German government after the federal elections on February 23.

On February 17, a mini-summit of European allies was held in Paris to discuss the situation in Ukraine and ways to increase defense spending.

The Paris talks revealed European disagreements. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said that he was ready to send peacekeeping troops to Ukraine, if necessary, along with other countries. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk ruled out this option.
