Rare four-day solar storm will hit Earth: Why you may feel worse than usual
Scientists forecast a powerful magnetic storm this weekend (photo: Freepik)
If this weekend you feel like you forgot to recharge your own battery, don’t rush to blame coffee or lack of sleep. The reason lies 150 million kilometers away. The Sun has decided to put on a real light show, the effects of which we will feel from April 17 to 20. A space storm of this scale is rare in spring — and it doesn’t just affect your mood, it can literally test your blood vessels.
RBC-Ukraine explains why the coming days may turn into an emotional rollercoaster and how to avoid being thrown off balance by solar flares.
Calendar of red days: when the Sun will hit hardest
Space doesn’t take weekends off — so get ready for a prolonged dip.
April 17 (Friday)
The beginning of the “turbulence.” The magnetic field is just starting to fluctuate, but weather-sensitive people may already feel the first signs — sudden drowsiness during the day and mild brain fog. The K-index remains at level 4.
April 18–19 (Saturday and Sunday)
The peak of the storm. A powerful поток of ionized particles will hit Earth. This is the so-called red level (5–6 points), when technology may malfunction, and headaches can appear without an obvious reason. This is when the body operates at the limit of its adaptive capacity.
April 20 (Monday)
Magnetic hangover. The storm will subside but leave behind a trail of apathy. The workweek may start heavily, so don’t plan anything too demanding.
What is a magnetic storm?
A magnetic storm is a reaction of Earth’s magnetic field to powerful energy emissions from the Sun. When a strong solar flare or coronal mass ejection occurs, charged particles reach our planet and interact with the magnetosphere.
This can cause:
- Fluctuations in the geomagnetic field
- Satellite malfunctions
- Communication disruptions
- Bright auroras
Sometimes such phenomena may also affect how people feel, especially those sensitive to weather changes. When Earth’s magnetic field is shaken by solar wind, capillary blood circulation in the body may slow down.
Blood can become slightly “thicker,” and the brain may experience mild oxygen deficiency. This can lead to irritability, insomnia, and a feeling of exhaustion — as if you ran a marathon while just sitting on the couch.
How magnetic storms affect people
Although the impact of magnetic storms on the human body is still debated in scientific circles, many weather-sensitive individuals report similar symptoms. People with cardiovascular diseases and chronic conditions are the most affected.
The most common symptoms include:
- Sudden headaches and migraines;
- Blood pressure fluctuations;
- Joint and muscle pain;
- Sleep disturbances (insomnia or excessive drowsiness);
- General weakness, apathy, and fatigue;
Those most affected include:
- weather-sensitive individuals;
- People with cardiovascular conditions;
- Elderly people and pregnant women;
- Those experiencing chronic fatigue or constant stress.
Survival plan: how to get through it
To avoid spending these four days glued to a blood pressure monitor, take a few proactive steps:
Avoid heavy artillery. Skip fried foods and strong alcohol. Your heart is already under strain.
Herbal calm. Replace your third cup of coffee with mint or lemon balm tea. This can help calm the nervous system. Don’t forget to drink more water.
Oxygen matters. Even if you don’t feel like going outside, ventilate your room more often. Fresh air is the best antidote to magnetic fog.
Prioritize sleep and rest. This is not the time for major tasks. Your best allies are your bed and a calm routine. Aim for 8–9 hours of sleep, read a book, or watch a series.
