Russian President Vladimir Putin offered to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Moscow. The Ukrainian leader declined, AFP reports.

During talks with US President Donald Trump on August 18, Putin proposed a bilateral meeting with Zelenskyy in Moscow.

"Putin mentioned Moscow," a source told AFP.

At the time, Zelenskyy was at the White House with European leaders and responded "no."

Zelenskyy-Putin meeting

Trump and Putin met on August 15 in Alaska. On August 18, Zelenskyy flew to the US, where he held talks with Trump and European leaders at the White House.

Afterwards, Trump called Putin to arrange a leader-level meeting.

Russia supported a bilateral format for the meeting. A trilateral summit including Zelenskyy, Trump, and Putin could follow.

Possible venues for a Zelenskyy-Putin meeting include Geneva or Hungary. Switzerland has already expressed readiness to host the summit and provide Putin with "immunity" from the ICC arrest.

Trump has said the Zelenskyy-Putin summit could take place in the coming weeks.
