The meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump would prematurely give the Kremlin leader a false sense of his importance. He must first earn it, stated Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski.

Sikorski welcomed the fact that Trump is demanding a change in position from Putin, not from Ukraine.

"But there is one piece of advice I would give the administration, based on the experience of a country that has warned the rest of the world about Putin: this is not the same Putin that Trump knew during his first term. I am skeptical about granting Putin a meeting (with Trump - ed.) prematurely," the Polish Minister said.

He noted that the US President is the leader of the free world, while Putin is a marginal figure and a war criminal accused of abducting Ukrainian children.

"I would advise that Putin earn the right to a meeting. If it happens too soon, it will elevate him beyond his significance and give him a false sense of importance," Sikorski emphasized.

Trump wants to meet Putin

On January 22, US President Donald Trump posted on his Truth Social account, addressing Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Trump urged Russia to conclude a deal to end the war in Ukraine as soon as possible. Otherwise, he threatened to impose higher tariffs and sanctions.

It was also reported earlier that Trump’s team is preparing for negotiations and a meeting with Putin to stop the war against Ukraine. Additionally, the Kremlin has expressed readiness for a meeting with Trump without any preconditions.
