US Senator Richard Blumenthal stated that the vote on the sanctions bill against Russia needs to be accelerated, according to Suspilne.

According to US Senator Richard Blumenthal, Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin does not deserve any additional time, and the vote on the Russia sanctions bill should be accelerated. He emphasized that while the president is moving in the right direction, stronger action is needed; he advocates for sanctions to be "at 500%, not just 100%."

Blumenthal suggested seizing the moment to pass the bill, noting that there are already 85 supporters in the Senate and that, if needed, 90 votes could be secured. He stressed that the vote is both achievable and necessary, and that the current moment calls for decisive action.

He also underlined the importance of a legislative initiative, not just the president’s executive order, to demonstrate unity between the executive and legislative branches. He said passing the bill would show that the US is fulfilling its commitments to Ukraine.

Blumenthal concluded that the sanctions bill would help "stop the war" and that "Putin must understand this."

Trump shortens Putin's timeline

Earlier in July, US President Donald Trump gave Vladimir Putin 50 days to end the war in Ukraine, warning that failure to do so would result in secondary tariffs for buyers of Russian raw materials.

However, on July 28, Trump announced a change in his stance, saying Putin now has just 10–12 days left. He also indicated that in addition to secondary tariffs, he is considering secondary sanctions against Russia.

On July 29, Trump clarified that the 10-day countdown begins on that day.
