Russian President Vladimir Putin believes that new US sanctions will not have a substantial effect on the Russian economy, Kommersant reports.

"Yes, they (the sanctions - ed.) are serious for us, of course, that's clear. And they will have certain consequences, but they will not significantly impact us, especially our economic well-being," Putin stated.

He clarified that the US sanctions would negatively affect Russian-American relations. Putin also complained that it was an unfriendly act and an attempt to pressure Russia.

"But no country that respects itself, and no people who respect themselves, ever make decisions like that (under pressure - ed.)," the President added.

US sanctions against Russia

On the night of October 23, the US Department of the Treasury announced new sanctions against Russia aimed at forcing President Vladimir Putin to sit down at the negotiating table with Ukraine.

Russian oil giants Rosneft and Lukoil, as well as a number of their subsidiaries, have been targeted by the restrictions.

Any assets and interests of these companies located in the US or controlled by American citizens are subject to freezing and mandatory reporting to the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC).

According to Bloomberg, Indian refinery executives announced that such US restrictions have effectively made it impossible to import Russian oil.

Additionally, on October 23, the European Union approved a new sanctions package against Russia. The measures include a complete ban on importing Russian LNG by 2027.
