Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova stated that NATO is allegedly preparing, together with Ukraine, weapons for massive strikes on Russian airfields and airbases, including deep inside Russia, according to Zakharova's comment for the Russian Foreign Ministry.
According to Zakharova, the matter concerns the creation of weapons designed for mass destruction and the prolonged disabling of Russian aviation infrastructure.
She also claims that the actions of Ukraine and NATO allegedly give the Russian military grounds to pay increased attention to enterprises involved in the development and production of weapons used against Russia.
"It is from these positions that we will assess both the current situation and the prospects for its further escalation," Zakharova stated.
In addition, the Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman claimed that the Alliance had allegedly lost the remnants of rationality and was moving toward a high-risk zone.
She also accused Kyiv of trying to drag NATO into a direct military conflict with Russia. According to her, the Ukrainian authorities are allegedly seeking to improve their position on the battlefield in this way.
Europe's expectations
European countries hold the opposite view regarding Moscow. According to intelligence services, the continent is currently in a gray zone between war and peace. It is believed that the Kremlin may risk at least limited military action against a NATO member immediately after the end of hostilities in Ukraine.
In the view of European officials, the primary targets would be the Baltic states – Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania – toward which Russian leader Vladimir Putin has been making threats.
The Guardian published an article stating that Russia may be preparing military and hybrid provocations on NATO's eastern flank.
