Putin calls Xi ahead of possible Trump meeting

Russian president Vladimir Putin spoke with Chinese leader Xi Jinping on the eve of Putin's possible meeting with US president Donald Trump, reports the South China Morning Post.
According to Chinese state media, Xi Jinping had a phone call with Putin on Friday, August 8.
The Guardian writes that the Russian and Chinese leaders discussed the situation in Ukraine. According to Reuters, Xi Jinping said that China will continue to facilitate peace talks. He also noted that Beijing welcomes continued contacts between Russia and the United States.
Putin and Xi Jinping spoke on June 19 after the G7 summit in Canada. At that time, Putin and Xi Jinping allegedly discussed the outcome of the G7 summit and the situation in the Middle East.
Trump-Putin meeting
US special envoy Steve Witkoff and Vladimir Putin had a three-hour meeting in Moscow on August 6. Donald Trump said the meeting was productive.
According to the New York Times, Trump said he intends to meet with Putin next week and also wants to hold a trilateral meeting with Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Putin later said that the UAE could be a possible venue for his meeting with Trump.
According to Fox News, the meeting between Trump and Putin may take place next Monday, August 11, in Rome.
