President of Slovakia proposes holding negotiations between Russia and Ukraine in Bratislava
European politicians need to intensify diplomacy to end the war in Ukraine, and if necessary, peace talks can be held in Bratislava, according to Slovak President Peter Pellegrini.
Pellegrini said that European and Slovak politicians face a fundamental task of ensuring peace in Ukraine.
He immediately added that if necessary, he would propose Bratislava for peace negotiations, citing its experience in hosting similar summits.
"Let's talk about ceasefire, about peaceful scenarios, let's intensify diplomacy, and consider weapons as a last resort," the president said.
Position of Slovak officials on the war in Ukraine
From the very beginning, Slovakia actively supported Ukraine in its defense against Russian aggression and provided military aid to the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
However, then Prime Minister Robert Fico came to power. He refused to help Ukraine with weapons and began to speak more often about the need to hold peace talks with Russia.
In early April, Fico's ally Peter Pellegrini was elected president of Slovakia, who also supports a diplomatic solution to the war in Ukraine.
