Russian propaganda fabricated a fake claim that Ukraine is allegedly preparing a chemical weapons attack in Izium, Kharkiv region, according to the Center for Countering Disinformation on Telegram.
As noted by the Center for Countering Disinformation (TsPD), Russia fabricated claims that Ukrainian nuclear, biological, and chemical protection units had allegedly arrived in Izium. Kremlin propagandists invented a story that a chemical weapons attack was being prepared in the city between January 6 and 8.
"This campaign may serve as an example of the classic 'information alibi' tactic. Russia can preemptively attribute actions to Ukraine that it systematically carries out itself, creating informational cover for possible provocations or crimes," the Center emphasized.
Notably, Russia is also using religious themes, as the fake provocation is tied to the dates of Orthodox Christmas. This is intended to turn Ukrainians against their authorities. Russia’s claims are not supported by any evidence.
"The use of chemical agents by Russian forces has been repeatedly documented by the Ukrainian side and international organizations, while Russia itself remains under sanctions for employing chemical weapons," the TsPD added.
Russia uses chemical weapons
In July last year, it was reported that the Security Service of Ukraine had recorded over 10,000 cases of Russian forces using chemical weapons against the Defense Forces since the start of the full-scale war.
Law enforcement authorities established that Russian units systematically use aerosol grenades with toxic CS and CN agents, as well as ampoules of chloropicrin, to lure Ukrainian soldiers out of their positions under fire.
The highest number of such incidents has been recorded in the eastern direction, as well as during strikes on the Nikopol district in the Dnipropetrovsk region.
