Powerful earthquake struck in China: Death of 111 people and many injured reported
In the border region of Gansu-Qinghai in China, a powerful earthquake has occurred. It is reported that 111 people have died, and over 230 have been injured, reports Reuters.
The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) estimated the magnitude of the earthquake at 6.1. Chinese state media reported the earthquake with a magnitude of 6.2.
According to the EMSC, the earthquake occurred at a depth of 35 km, with its epicenter located 102 km southwest of the provincial capital, Lanzhou, in Gansu province.
It is also reported that the epicenter was 5 km from the border between two northwestern provinces. Eyewitnesses noted strong tremors in many parts of Qinghai province.
The affected area is in a mountainous region, and rescue efforts are focused on preventing secondary disasters caused by factors other than the earthquake. Tuesday morning's temperature near the earthquake site was -14 degrees Celsius.
The earthquake also damaged some water supply facilities, power lines, roads, and other infrastructure.
After the earthquake, nine aftershocks with a magnitude of 3.0 and higher were recorded on Tuesday.
Emergency events in China
Earlier, it was reported that in August, a magnitude 5.5 earthquake occurred in the eastern Chinese province of Shandong. The incident resulted in the destruction of 126 buildings, and twenty-one people were injured.
Additionally, it was previously revealed that Typhoon Doksuri brought heavy rains to several regions in China, marking the most substantial rainfall in the last 140 years. As a result, at least 10 people died in Hebei province, with 18 individuals considered missing.
