A major power outage hit several areas of Moscow, leaving residential neighborhoods without electricity, trapping people in elevators and disrupting metro service, according to Russian Telegram channels.
Power outages hit multiple districts of the Russian capital, including the Zamoskvorechye, Danilovsky and Gagarinsky districts.
The outage caused major disruptions on the Kaluzhsko-Rizhskaya metro line. Trains on the orange metro line operated with significantly increased intervals. A large crowd formed at the exit of Rizhskaya station, while escalators were not working and there was no electricity in nearby stores.
As of 8:34 p.m., metro train service has reportedly been restored.
Several people were also trapped in elevators after the sudden power outage.
What is known about the cause
According to preliminary information, the widespread power outage was caused by a fire at Moscow’s combined heat and power plant. Local residents report sirens sounding at the scene, while several fire crews and ambulances arrived.
A little later, Russian sources reported that the siren at the facility had been turned off, and some of the ambulances left the area.
Earlier today, around 10,000 consumers in the Moscow region were left without power following a nighttime drone attack. Mosoblenergo energy company said it was the first major power outage in the region since the beginning of the year.
It should also be noted that Moscow and the Moscow region were attacked by drones overnight on August 18. Local authorities reported fires in several areas.
