Pope Francis speaks of 'tough winter' for Ukraine and calls for support
Pope Francis stated that the winter will be challenging for Ukraine. The Pontiff called for support for Ukrainians, Vatican News reports.
On Wednesday, November 27, Pope Francis met with pilgrims in St. Peter's Square at the Vatican. During his speech, he mentioned Ukraine.
The Pontiff urged people not to forget the Ukrainian people, who are suffering greatly. He also called for prayers for peace.
"And you, children, young people, think of the Ukrainian children and boys who are suffering this period without heating with a very hard, very strong winter. Pray for Ukrainian children and young people," Pope Francis said.
While greeting Polish pilgrims, the Pontiff asked them to support Ukrainians during the "tough winter."
"Be merciful and peacemakers, supporting those enduring hardships and suffering because of the war, especially Ukrainians, in getting through the winter. This will be a tough winter for Ukraine," Pope Francis stated.
It is worth noting that Pope Francis has met with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy three times since the start of the full-scale war in Ukraine. Their latest meeting took place in October 2024, during which Zelenskyy presented the Vatican with a painting depicting the Bucha massacre.
Before this, the Ukrainian president and Pope Francis met in May 2023 and during the G7 summit in Italy's Apulia in June 2024.
The Pontiff has repeatedly mentioned the war in Ukraine in his prayers and speeches, calling for a "peaceful" resolution to the conflict.
