The US and UK may lift restrictions on Ukraine's use of long-range weapons against Russia this month. The deal may be approved at the UN General Assembly, according to Politico.

Recently, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer visited the White House to meet with US President Joe Biden. The leaders discussed the possible lifting of restrictions on Ukraine's use of long-range weapons. This includes allowing long-range Western missiles provided to Ukraine to hit military targets in Russia.

Four UK officials told Politico they did not expect any official announcement this weekend. One of them suggested that the US-UK deal could be confirmed at the UN General Assembly later this month. Then world leaders, including Biden and Starmer, will gather in New York.

Western officials also believe that this decision alone will not change the course of the war. However, the West has been increasingly open to Ukraine's requests to help halt Russia's offensive on the eastern front in recent months.

Background

Partners have been restricting Ukraine's use of the weapons provided. We are talking about long-range missiles that Ukraine wants to use to strike Russia.

Ukraine is calling on the US and UK to lift the restrictions, stressing that these attacks are in self-defense. Recently, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy visited Kyiv. They discussed lifting the restrictions with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

After the meeting, Zelenskyy said he was waiting for a decision from his partners and called for no delay as Russia was moving military facilities inland.
