Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk stated that he does not support the idea of holding future peace talks on Ukraine in Hungary, Sky News reports.

According to the White House, US President Donald Trump proposed Budapest as the venue for a meeting between Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelenskyy, with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán also participating.

Tusk believes that holding the talks in the Hungarian capital, where the Budapest Memorandum was signed in 1994, would be historical irony.

Ukraine gave up its nuclear arsenal in exchange for security guarantees, which were violated by the annexation of Crimea in 2014 and Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022.

“Maybe I'm superstitious, but this time I would try to find another place,” the Polish Prime Minister said.

Zelenskyy and Putin meeting

After talks with Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the White House on August 18, US President Donald Trump discussed with Russian leader Vladimir Putin the possibility of their meeting.

Moscow insists on a bilateral format, but a future trilateral summit including the US is also possible.

Potential venues under consideration include Geneva, Rome, and Hungary. Switzerland has expressed readiness to host the talks and provide Putin with immunity from an ICC arrest warrant, while Austria has also expressed willingness to organize the summit.
