Supporting Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán's policies directly aids Russia, as he systematically blocks EU initiatives to support Ukraine, Poland's Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski stated.
Why Hungary's policies benefit Russia
According to the Polish minister, Budapest's stance creates significant obstacles to European unity.
Sikorski emphasized that the Hungarian government's actions have harsh consequences for regional security.
"Moscow supports Orbán because he sabotages the European Union, blocks sanctions, and obstructs funding for Ukraine," the Polish Foreign Minister stressed.
He also added that there is a direct connection here that should not be ignored when assessing European politicians' actions.
"So anyone supporting Orbán is helping Moscow. It's really that simple," Sikorski stated.
Orbán's domestic problems
The position of Hungary's current prime minister has weakened amid the election campaign. Recently, Viktor Orbán was unexpectedly booed at a rally in Győr, a city long considered a stronghold of his party. In response to the protests, the politician accused attendees of "working for Ukraine."
Polls show declining support for the government. The opposition party Tisza, led by Péter Magyar, has increased its lead over the ruling coalition to 23% among active voters, potentially securing a constitutional majority.
Amid a possible defeat, Budapest is concerned that Orbán might refuse to recognize the election results and resort to radical measures to retain power, as he did in 2006.
