Poland must develop its own nuclear weapons, as it sits "on the brink of armed conflict," Polish President Karol Nawrocki said this in an interview with Polsat News.

"This path, in full respect of all international norms, is the path we must follow. We need to take steps so we can get started. We are a country on the edge of armed conflict. The aggressive, imperial stance of Russia toward Poland is obvious," Nawrocki said.
He stressed that he does not know if it will happen at all, but supports building Poland's security "even based on nuclear capability."
"Russia could respond aggressively to anything," the president added, responding to questions about Moscow's possible reactions to the start of a Polish nuclear program.
EU seeks to strengthen its nuclear arsenal
Recall that on February 5, the US–Russia nuclear arms treaty, known as New START, expired.
Russian President Vladimir Putin previously suggested voluntarily adhering to the limits for another year, but without inspections, the proposal is largely symbolic.
In response, US President Donald Trump said he would like a new deal that includes China, though no concrete steps have been taken yet.
At the same time, Trump ordered the Pentagon to resume nuclear testing "on equal terms" with Russia and China.
Meanwhile, media reports indicate that EU countries are questioning the US's commitment to defend them against Russia and are exploring ways to strengthen their own arsenals rather than continue relying on Washington.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said Germany and France are negotiating a European nuclear deterrent.
Several European countries publicly support talks on creating their own nuclear weapons in addition to US nuclear capabilities, amid falling trust in the US under Donald Trump's administration.
