Poland to increase defense budget to 5% of GDP in 2024
Next year, Poland will spend 5% of GDP on defense. Now the country spends 4%, according to Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski.
He noted that Poland currently spends a larger share of its GDP on defense than any other NATO country.
"Poland spends 4 (percent of GDP on defense - ed.), and we will spend 5% next year. We are number one in NATO, including the United States... because we are no longer in eternal post-Cold War peace," the minister said.
However, despite Poland's significant spending, Sikorski warned against using military budgets as a barometer. For example, he cited Iceland, which has almost no defense budget but remains an important asset due to its strategic location.
The Polish Foreign Minister also said that he supported former US President Donald Trump's pressure on NATO countries to increase defense spending.
According to Radoslaw Sikorski, Warsaw is considering Kyiv's proposal to shoot down Russian missiles over Ukraine flying in the direction of Poland.
Earlier, it was reported that South Korea will produce K2PL tanks in Poland. It is planned to produce 180 vehicles.
