Poland to assist allies in detecting Russian shadow fleet tankers in Baltic Sea
Poland will assist allied countries in the Baltic Sea to detect Russia's shadow fleet ships illegally transporting oil, according to the Twitter (X) of the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
"During the meeting of the Baltic Sea States Council, Minister Radosław Sikorski declared Poland's assistance in identifying shadow fleet type ships transporting Russian products, primarily oil, attempting to bypass imposed sanctions," the statement reads.
As noted by the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, "although the number of ships is estimated to be in the hundreds, only some of them have been identified so far."
Sanctions against the Russian oil industry
In 2022, Western countries imposed a price cap on Russian oil. However, it is not fully adhered to as Russia finds ways to circumvent the restrictions.
In particular, revenues to the Russian state budget from oil increased by almost 50% in May of this year compared to the previous year. This was due to the rise in commodity prices and the country's adaptation to international sanctions.
Moreover, Reuters reported that the Russian shadow fleet of tankers is causing damage to the environment.
Today, Bloomberg reported that G7 leaders, following the summit in Italy, promised to strengthen restrictions on the price of Russian oil, choke off future Kremlin energy projects, and reduce Moscow's revenues from metals.
