Poland's President calls for dismantling Nord Stream pipelines
Russian gas supplies to Europe should never be restored, even if Ukraine and Russia reach a peace agreement, stated Poland’s President Andrzej Duda in an interview with BBC.
He expressed hope that European leaders would "learn lessons from Russia’s aggression against Ukraine" and push through a decision to never resume gas deliveries through these pipelines.
According to him, this will mean that countries like Germany will not be tempted to resume gas supplies from Russia to support their own economies.
"I believe the Nord Stream pipelines should be dismantled," Duda said. "This pipeline causes a very big threat to Ukraine, to Poland, to Slovakia but also to other Central European countries. It is a threat from the point of view of energy, from the point of view of the military but also it is a huge economic threat because it means a domination of Russia over Europe in the economic sense," Duda said.
Ukraine halts Russian gas transit
Ukraine has ceased the transit of Russian gas to Europe after January 1, 2025. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine would still transport gas to EU countries, but only if the gas is not Russian.
This decision has angered Hungary and Slovakia.
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico even threatened to stop electricity supplies to Ukraine in response to the gas transit termination.
Meanwhile, other EU countries have not experienced significant issues from the cessation of Russian gas transit via Ukraine.
