Poland will continue supporting Ukraine but is calling on Kyiv to show goodwill to reduce tensions in bilateral relations, says Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, according to Polskieradio24.

Tusk assured that Warsaw would not change its position on the need to support Ukraine during upcoming negotiations. But he urged Polish government officials to be cautious in their statements about further financial assistance.

"Ukraine is at war, but Poland bears the main burden of protecting our border while also defending the European border from threats coming from the East, and it should be treated with special attention," he said.

The Polish prime minister noted that he already sees "signals of awareness" among Ukrainian politicians of the harmfulness of the escalation "for which they bear responsibility."

"It is worth looking for ways to have an honest conversation about the past, and it is not worth escalating these tensions," Tusk remarked.

He added that good Polish-Ukrainian relations are in the mutual interest of both countries, but that this requires mutual goodwill.

"Warsaw can no longer be the only side constantly demonstrating goodwill. But I would like this firm position not to be accompanied by contempt or hostility, because that will lead to nothing meaningful," the Polish prime minister stressed.

Earlier, the chancellery of Polish president-elect Karol Nawrocki criticized the decision by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to submit a bill on the creation of the National Pantheon. It described the move as an action of an escalatory nature.

Meanwhile, Polish defense minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz recently stressed that Warsaw would not support Ukraine's accession to the EU if Kyiv continues to honor certain historical figures.
