Poland launches large-scale inspections of bomb shelters after Russian drone attack

Polish services are conducting large-scale inspections of bomb shelters to assess their suitability as temporary shelters, RMF24 reported.
The State Fire Service (PSP), together with county building inspection offices, is inspecting buildings that can be used as shelters. More than 2,000 inspections have already been carried out, and technical reports have been issued. Over 1,000 facilities meet the requirements of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and can serve as shelters in case of danger.
Protective facilities are divided into two types: temporary shelters and protective structures (bunkers and shelters). They are important for the safety of people in towns and villages.
The publication noted that under the 2025–2026 population protection and civil defense program (OLiOC), almost 5 billion zlotys will be allocated to local authorities. The funds will go to the repair and modernization of existing shelters, the construction of new facilities, and the development of warning and communication systems.
Priority will be given to the regions under the East Shield program, but support will also be provided to cities where the threat is particularly high.
According to the new law, local authorities must identify buildings that can be converted into protective structures, including basements and new buildings. Owners and managers can receive subsidies for equipping shelters, covering up to 100% of expenses.
The program also provides for the renovation of shelters under schools, ensuring that students and staff can be protected in the event of danger.
Drone attack on Poland
Russia attacked Poland with strike drones on the night of September 10.
As it became known, most of the drones entered Poland from the territory of Belarus.
The Russian Ministry of Defense claimed that Russia allegedly did not intend to attack Poland with drones. The ministry of the aggressor country also proposed holding consultations with Polish Defense Ministry officials.
