Poland blocks illegal Boeing tire shipment bound for Russia, violating Ukraine invasion sanctions

Poland has confiscated 5 tons of aircraft tires intended for Boeing planes. The shipment was reportedly headed to Azerbaijan via a transit route through Belarus and Russia, according to a statement from Poland's National Revenue Administration, as reported by Reuters.
"Officers discovered during the inspection of a truck in Koroszczyn (a village on the Polish-Belarusian border) that the driver was transporting tires used in Boeing civil planes instead of the declared car and bus tires," Poland's National Revenue Administration reported.
The agency clarified that the shipment originated from a company in Spain, while the intended recipient was a company based in Azerbaijan.
"Criminal fiscal proceedings were initiated in connection with customs fraud. The sanctioned goods were detained," the Revenue Administration added.
The goods were detained because their transit route through Belarus and Russia falls under EU sanctions.
Reuters notes that Russia has developed methods to circumvent sanctions banning the supply of aviation parts. Items such as cabin pressure valves and landing gear components are reportedly reaching Russia through intermediaries in countries that have not supported sanctions against Moscow, including Tajikistan, the United Arab Emirates, Türkiye, China, and Kyrgyzstan.
Aircraft troubles in Russia
Russian aircraft have been breaking down more frequently amid Western sanctions. As a result, pilots have increasingly been forced to make emergency landings.
