Poland and Ukraine in talks over temporary border closure for trade, Tusk says
Representatives of Poland and Ukraine are in talks regarding the closure of the border between the countries for trade, states the Prime Minister of Poland, Donald Tusk.
According to Tusk, the issue of border closure will also be discussed during his meeting with farmers. He notes that there has already been an attempt to limit the influx of agricultural products from Ukraine, allowing duty-free entry for the same amount as the average in 2022-2023.
However, Poland plans to propose in Brussels that the reference period not be 2022-2023, but rather the time before the war.
"The quotas should be more restrictive so as not to threaten Polish producers," he explains.
Tusk also mentions negotiations with the Ukrainian side regarding the "temporary closure of the border for goods exchange."
"It is known that this will be a temporary and mutually painful decision. I am ready to accept even tough decisions when it comes to the border with Ukraine, always in agreement with Kyiv, to avoid unnecessary tension between Warsaw and Kyiv, but we must find a solution that will be long-lasting," says Tusk.
Border blockade with Ukraine
Polish farmers have been blocking the border with Ukraine for several weeks now. They are not allowing trucks to pass through checkpoints, greatly complicating Ukrainian exports.
Farmers demand that, in addition to banning the import of Ukrainian grain into Poland, the authorities also prohibit the import of fruits, eggs, and meat.
This is explained by the fact that the import of Ukrainian goods affects prices on the domestic market.
Recently, Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal proposed a five-point plan to unblock the Polish border.
The head of government also noted that if the problem is not resolved, Ukraine will implement reciprocal measures.
