Pistorius addresses sending German peacekeepers to Ukraine
German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius has firmly stated his position on peacekeepers in Ukraine. While the war continues, no peacekeeping contingent will be deployed to the country, informs Spiegel.
According to him, as the largest NATO country in Europe and the biggest economy on the continent, "Germany could not stand aside and remain indifferent."
"But as long as the war (in Ukraine) continues, there will be no German soldiers on Ukrainian soil," the minister stated.
Issue of German peacekeepers in Ukraine
The deployment of peacekeepers in Ukraine has been discussed with increasing intensity recently. This is not the first time such discussions have taken place in Germany.
Just a day earlier, on December 20, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz stated that talks about the possibility of deploying a European peacekeeping contingent to Ukraine in the future are premature.
Scholz's position aligns with Pistorius' statement. Previously, Scholz had stated that sending German peacekeepers is impossible while the war is ongoing in Ukraine.
At the same time, Pistorius does not rule out the possibility of Germany participating in peacekeeping forces for Ukraine in the long term, as part of a post-war scenario for Ukraine.
