North Korean leader Kim Jong Un personally oversaw a test launch of a long-range surface-to-air missile on Wednesday, December 24, at a launch site near the country’s eastern coast, according to Reuters.

According to KCNA, the test, aimed at assessing the country’s strategic technologies for developing a new type of high-altitude missile, successfully destroyed aerial targets at a distance of 200 km (124 miles).

Kim also observed construction work at another facility where an 8,700-ton nuclear-powered submarine capable of launching surface-to-air missiles was located. However, the location and date of the visit were not disclosed.

KCNA said the submarine project is part of the ruling party’s efforts to modernize North Korea’s navy, one of five key initiatives the party is pursuing to strengthen the country’s defense capabilities.

In addition, Kim Jong Un stated that the comprehensive development of nuclear capabilities and the modernization of the navy are inevitable, arguing that the "modern world is by no means modern."

The North Korean leader added that South Korea’s plan to develop a nuclear-powered submarine, agreed with Washington, would further escalate tensions on the Korean Peninsula and pose a threat to national security, necessitating countermeasures.

North Korea steps up military buildup

In September, Kim announced that North Korea would introduce a new policy aimed at the simultaneous development of nuclear forces and conventional armed forces. According to him, the new course should become a "key factor in strengthening the country’s defense capability and ensuring national security."

That same month, weapons tests involving unmanned systems were conducted under his supervision. Kim reviewed the characteristics and combat applications of various drones and later ordered the enhancement of drone capabilities using artificial intelligence.

Earlier, Kim said North Korea had achieved new advances in the military sphere, including the development of a "powerful secret weapon."
