Each new column of protesters on Rustaveli Street is greeted with applause. People are inspired against all odds. Columns of Georgians are heading to the parliament building.
It is also reported that Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili will join the protest on Sunday evening.
What preceded the protests
At the end of October 2024, Georgia held parliamentary elections that turned out to be very controversial. The pro-Russian Georgian Dream party won, although according to forecasts and opinion polls, the opposition parties were supposed to have an advantage. Moreover, the ruling party suspended negotiations on European integration. After that, people began to hold demonstrations demanding re-elections and a return to the country's EU course.
In addition, on December 14, the electoral college in the Georgian parliament elected former footballer Mikheil Kavelashvili as president. He was the only candidate for the presidency nominated by the Georgian Dream party.
The term of office of the current President of Georgia, Salome Zurabishvili, expires on December 29.
