Peace talks should pressure Russia, not Ukraine - Polish Foreign Minister
Peace talks between Kyiv and Moscow should be pushed upon the aggressor country, Russia, not Ukraine, DW reports, citing Polish Minister of Foreign Radosław Sikorski.
"The distribution of tasks should be such that both the United States and the European Union help Ukraine achieve a better negotiating position for potential future talks, which should be encouraged and forced upon the aggressor, not the victim," Sikorski said.
The Polish Foreign Minister is also convinced that the European Union needs to "mobilize even more" in light of the potential return of a Donald Trump administration.
As reported by Polske Radio, Sikorski assured that Poland's presidency of the Council of the European Union in the first half of next year should help reach an agreement on further sanctions against Russia.
"During our presidency, we hope to tighten the sanctions already imposed and introduce new ones, especially against the so-called Russian shadow fleet, meaning these very dangerous tankers that cause enormous environmental pollution, like what is happening now in the Sea of Azov, and which pose both geopolitical and economic threats," Sikorski explained.
Earlier, it was revealed that there is generally a skeptical attitude toward "talks for the sake of talks" with Russia. According to the survey, two-thirds (64.1%) of Ukrainians believe that negotiations with Russia should not take place unless Ukraine receives real security guarantees from the West.
