A Bombardier Challenger 600 passenger plane made an emergency landing on a highway near Naples, Florida, due to a malfunction, and caught fire. As a result of the incident, two people died, informs The New York Times.

According to officials, there were five people on board the small plane, and three of them managed to escape. It is currently unclear whether the aircraft collided with any vehicles or if anyone on the ground was injured.

"They were scheduled to land about 3:15 here in Naples, and about two or three minutes before that, our tower received word from the pilots that they have, quote, lost both engines," said Robin King, the director of communications for Naples Airport.

The plane crashed a few kilometers from the airport. According to the Collier County Sheriff's Office, the highway section will be closed for at least 24 hours.

Authorities have urged local residents to avoid the incident area while the police and the National Transportation Safety Board conduct an investigation.
