Panama denies US claim on free canal transit for American ships

The US State Department has claimed that American government vessels are allegedly granted free transit through the Panama Canal. However, according to the Panama Canal Authority on X, this statement does not reflect reality.
"In response to a publication circulated by the US State Department, the Panama Canal Authority, which holds the authority to set tariffs and other fees for transit through the canal, states that no changes have been made to these charges," the statement reads.
At the same time, the authority emphasized its readiness for further dialogue with the US, including discussions on the passage of American military vessels.
Issue of control over the Panama Canal
Former US President Donald Trump has repeatedly stated his intention to regain control of the Panama Canal for the United States. He has claimed that existing agreements have been violated and alleged that China effectively controls this strategically significant waterway.
In response, Panama President José Raúl Mulino assured that control over the canal remains entirely in the hands of Panama. He emphasized that the waterway, which plays a key role in global trade, including for the US, will continue to be managed by Panama.
In early February, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio arrived in Panama on an official visit. During a meeting with the country’s president, he issued an ultimatum regarding the future of the Panama Canal.
Following negotiations with the US official, José Raúl Mulino decided not to renew agreements with China.
