Pakistan reports successful operation against militants who attacked train, killing 21 hostages

Pakistan authorities announced the elimination of 33 militants who attacked a passenger train and the rescue of all remaining hostages, reports AP News.
Armed fighters from the separatist group Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) attacked the Jafer Express train traveling from Quetta to Peshawar. The train was inside a tunnel when the militants blew up the tracks, halting the locomotive and nine coaches.
"The group was ready to release the passengers in exchange for jailed militants," said BLA spokesman Jeeyand Baloch.
According to the military, the attackers killed 21 hostages and three soldiers who had been guarding the railway. Information Minister Attaullah Tarar emphasized that the military operation "successfully reached its logical conclusion" and prevented an even greater tragedy.
Reactions and consequences
Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi faced criticism for previously claiming that the BLA "posed no threat." Meanwhile, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning stated, "China will continue to firmly support Pakistan in its fight against terrorism."
Analysts believe the attack could backfire on the BLA. "After failing to inflict significant damage on the army in Balochistan, the group has shifted its focus to unarmed civilians. This may bring them media attention, but it will weaken their support among the population," said independent security expert Syed Muhammad Ali.
All rescued passengers were safely transported home after Pakistani militants hijacked a train and held hostages in Balochistan, while the injured were taken to hospitals in Quetta.
