Over 230,000 Canadians want Elon Musk’s citizenship revoked

Over 230,000 Canadians have signed a petition urging Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to revoke Elon Musk’s Canadian citizenship, accusing him of aligning with President Donald Trump, who has threatened Canada with tariffs and annexation, and of undermining Canadian sovereignty, informs to The Washington Post.
The petition, sponsored by Charlie Angus, a member of Parliament, claims that Musk has joined a "foreign government that is attempting to erase Canadian sovereignty" and is engaged in "activities that go against the national interest of Canada." It also accuses Musk of using his "wealth and power to influence our elections" and states that his actions "must be addressed." Despite the petition’s popularity, experts say it is unlikely to succeed due to Canada’s strict citizenship laws. Irene Bloemraad, a citizenship expert at the University of British Columbia, said, "Even if the petition attracts millions of signatures, the government cannot just take away a person’s Canadian citizenship."
Musk’s role in the Trump administration has been particularly controversial in Canada. He oversees the US DOGE Service, which has fired thousands of government employees to cut spending and has publicly supported Trump’s push for Canada to become the 51st state. Responding to the petition, Musk stated on social media, "Canada is not a real country." His criticism of Trudeau and support for Pierre Poilievre, leader of Canada’s Conservative Party, have further fueled tensions.
Musk’s controversial stance
The petition reflects growing anger in Canada over Musk’s political influence and his support of Trump’s policies. It comes amid a wave of anti-American sentiment, with Canadians boycotting US products and canceling trips across the border. This backlash follows recent controversies, including Elon Musk’s Nobel Prize nomination and reports of his alleged involvement with sanctioned Russian oligarchs.
Musk’s controversial political stance has also sparked international criticism. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz criticized Musk for supporting right-wing politics, and Germany accused Musk of interfering in its domestic affairs.
