The leadership of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) strongly condemned the recent shelling by Russia on the territory of Ukraine and called for an end to the war, according to a joint statement by the OSCE leaders.

In a statement, the current Chair of the OSCE, Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Affairs and Trade of Malta, Evarist Bartolo, along with the OSCE Secretary-General Helga Maria Schmid, noted that the New Year "began as oppressively as the previous one ended."

"Death and destruction have stolen the lives of women, men, boys and girls and destroyed essential infrastructure. Every day, it is civilians who consistently pay the price in this terrible conflict. They should never be the victims of deadly drone and missile attacks," the statement said.

The OSCE leaders strongly condemned Russia's attacks on Ukraine and called for the "immediate cessation of the ruthless violence that accomplishes nothing but perpetuates a vicious cycle of misery and suffering."

"We call for this war to end now," concluded the OSCE leaders.

Large-scale shelling of Ukraine on January 2

On Tuesday, January 2, Russian occupiers once again launched a massive attack on Ukraine using kamikaze drones and various types of missiles.

In total, Ukrainian defenders destroyed 72 missiles. The epicenter of the attack was focused on Kyiv, where air defense forces shot down around 60 missiles. Notably, 10 hypersonic aeroballistic missiles Kinzhal were intercepted.

The German Minister of Foreign Affairs, Annalena Baerbock, stated that the Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, through missile strikes, is demonstrating his intent to completely destroy Ukraine.

In 2024, Malta holds the chairmanship of the OSCE. The elections took place on December 2 against the backdrop of Russia's obstruction of the OSCE's work, opposing Estonia's chairmanship.
