Movie with highest chance of winning Oscar
According to bookmakers' latest predictions, Oppenheimer is most likely to win the Oscar for Best Picture. It is a biographical film directed by Christopher Nolan, starring Cillian Murphy as Robert Oppenheimer, the American theoretical physicist known as the father of the atomic bomb.
This scientist played a crucial role in the Manhattan Project - a government program amid World War II to develop the first nuclear weapon. The film was a joint production of the United Kingdom and the United States.
Oppenheimer was released worldwide on July 21, 2023. Its box office earnings surpassed $942 million globally, with a budget of $100 million, making it the third highest-grossing film of 2023. It became the highest-grossing among biographical films and films related to World War II.
This film has been nominated in multiple categories. According to bookmakers' predictions, Christopher Nolan is likely to win Best Director, Cillian Murphy for Best Actor, and Robert Downey Jr. for Best Supporting Actor.
What is more, it has the highest chances of winning Oscars in Best Editing, Best Original Score, and Best Sound.
Best Documentary Feature
According to bookmakers' predictions, 20 Days in Mariupol by Ukrainian war correspondent and videographer Mstyslav Chernov has the highest chance of winning an Oscar this year. Ukraine might receive its first Oscar.
The film depicts the Russian siege of Mariupol in February-March 2022 during Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The film was produced in 2023 in collaboration with Associated Press and Frontline. It was included in the competition program of the World Cinema Documentary and received the Audience Award.
Overall, the film has received over 20 awards and 40 nominations. It became the highest-grossing Ukrainian documentary film.
Best International Feature
Experts predict that the film The Zone of Interest will win this category. It is a dramatic film directed by Jonathan Glazer, based on a 2014 novel by British writer Martin Amis.
Filming took place in the Nazi concentration camp Auschwitz between 2021 and 2022. The film was a joint production of the United States, the United Kingdom, and Poland. It received positive reviews from critics.
Best Live-Action Short
The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar is an adaptation of Roald Dahl's popular novella about a wealthy man who seeks to develop extraordinary abilities to cheat in gambling. The cast includes Ralph Fiennes, Benedict Cumberbatch, Dev Patel, Ben Kingsley, and Richard Ayoade.
Best Animated Short
War Is Over! Inspired by the Music of John Lennon and Yoko is an 11-minute animated short film directed by Dave Mullins about John Lennon and Yoko Ono. It became a favorite in the days leading up to the Oscar ceremony.
Best Documentary Short
The ABCs of Book Banning tells the story of challenged and banned books in schools. Several children share their thoughts after reading materials considered unacceptable to them. This film ranks first among the contenders for the Oscar in the short film category.
