Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán is convinced that the meeting between US President Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin in Budapest will take place - but at a later date.
Orbán stated this in an interview with the Hungarian TV channel ATV.
"The Russian-American summit in Budapest is still on the agenda, although it has been delayed. What is delayed will still happen - just not when we want it, but a bit later," Orbán said.
He noted that peace talks between Russia and the West have "stalled" over the issue of territories. According to him, Russia allegedly plans to fully occupy the Donetsk region first and only then move on to peace negotiations.
The Hungarian prime minister also recalled the so-called Istanbul agreements of 2022, claiming that "the deal was close to success" but was allegedly "derailed by the Anglo-Saxons."
Trump-Putin meeting
In October, Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, following a phone conversation, announced their intention to hold a face-to-face meeting in Budapest, Hungary’s capital.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov were tasked with coordinating preparations for the talks. However, the American leader soon canceled the meeting, citing Russia’s unwillingness to revise its unreasonable demands for ending the war in Ukraine. Trump publicly stated that he was "not going to waste [his] time."
Later, on the night of October 23, Trump imposed sanctions on two of Russia’s oil giants - Rosneft and Lukoil. The US Department of the Treasury urged Moscow to immediately agree to a ceasefire.
Trump later said he was open to another meeting with Putin, but only if it resulted in a real agreement to end the war in Ukraine. The Kremlin confirmed that Putin was "not opposed" to negotiations, though no date for the summit has yet been set.
Ukraine is ready to support a potential Trump–Putin summit in Budapest, provided it leads to a ceasefire and an end to the war.
