Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said that Budapest is not interested in the collapse of Ukraine, as it would have serious negative consequences for his country.
According to Orbán, stability in Ukraine is important for Hungary due to the close energy ties between the two countries.
"Ukraine’s collapse would be a disaster for Hungary. Stability next door matters. Hungary supplies 44% of Ukraine’s electricity and 58% of its gas. Meanwhile, the war weakens Ukraine day by day," Orbán said.
Orbán emphasized that Ukraine’s disintegration would be catastrophic for Hungary and called on everyone supporting Kyiv to work toward achieving peace.
He added that peace is the only factor capable of strengthening Ukraine, and efforts to achieve it must begin immediately.
As a reminder, the day before, Orbán sparked a new controversy by claiming that in the war between Ukraine and Russia, "it is unclear who attacked whom." This openly cynical pro-Russian statement came amid EU decisions on further financial support for Kyiv.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha sharply responded to Orbán's remarks, reminding the Hungarian prime minister that during World War II, Horthy-era Hungary voluntarily allied with Nazi Germany and participated in the war both against European states and the Soviet Union.
